State Religion vs IQ

There are plenty of Religion vs IQ by country statistics out there. Unfortunately its easy to poke holes in IQ tests when administered across cultures. To add something new to the evidence:

Congratulations Mississippi, you're the least intelligent AND most religious state!

State IQ compared with % answering Yes to "Is religion an important part of your daily life?":

  2. You might want to calculate the R value on that. It seems like an extremely weak correlation to me.

  3. Throw out the South, which is both less intelligent and more religious than the rest of the country, and you have no correlation.

Furthermore, other differences between the states may explain the differences in IQ.

  4. Don't assume that everyone from the south is the same. I don't count myself among the hicks and idiots. I'm both an atheist, and have a slightly above the national average IQ. Of course, this could also be accredited to my living on the coast(I like to think of it as being farther south than the hicks) and not being from here originally.

  5. California ranks below all of the Southern states except LA and GA yet the two groups are near the extremes of the religiosity index. Seems like a pretty weak correlation to me. I suspect that if you change the abcissa to "% minorities", the R-squared will be significantly higher.
